MATH

SCA will fully implement the Baltimore County Mathematics Curriculum and the Illustrative Mathematics program, both of which are aligned to Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards and MCAP expectations. The mathematics curriculum promotes active, problem-based learning and encourages students to engage in mathematical reasoning, discussion, collaboration, and inquiry rather than passive learning.

Instruction focuses on both mathematical content and mathematical practices. Students in grades 6 and 7 will study Ratios and Proportional Relationships, The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Grade 8 students will study Functions, Geometry, Statistics and Probability, and other advanced concepts, while qualified students may take Algebra I through an accelerated pathway.

Mathematics instruction is designed to foster critical thinking and communication through rich collaborative tasks, questioning strategies, multiple representations, problem creation, and analysis of reasoning. Lessons include warm-ups, collaborative instructional activities, lesson synthesis, and reflection opportunities. Teachers will use cooperative learning, effective questioning, and discussion-based instruction to help students develop deeper conceptual understanding and confidence in mathematics.

Professional development will support teachers in transitioning from traditional instruction to facilitative teaching roles that encourage inquiry, discourse, and independent problem-solving. Teachers will receive ongoing training in mathematical practices, student discourse, differentiation, and culturally responsive instruction.
