SCIENCE

The science curriculum at SCA is inquiry-driven and STEM-focused, providing students in grades 6–8 with rigorous, hands-on learning
experiences aligned to Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The curriculum emphasizes three-dimensional learning through disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts.
Students will engage in investigations, engineering design challenges, project-based learning, and real-world problem-solving related to topics such as environmental sustainability, energy systems, and human impact on Earth. These experiences support the school’s mission by fostering curiosity, innovation, leadership, and academic excellence among middle school males.
The science program also promotes college and career readiness through technical writing, lab reports, collaborative projects, and presentations that mirror high school and introductory college coursework. Opportunities such as science fairs, STEM showcases, and partnerships with colleges and STEM professionals further expose students to advanced learning and career pathways.
Instructional strategies emphasize active engagement, collaboration, and hands-on experimentation, which are particularly effective for the school’s target student population. Teachers will use data-driven instruction, formative assessments, and differentiated learning opportunities to ensure all students have access to rigorous content and appropriate support or enrichment.
